FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I sign-up?
- Sign-up forms were passed out during the 5th grade visit on March 17th. It is the form that you will
- use to sign-up for your elective choice - band, orchestra, choir or wheel. If you have lost that form,
- please see your regular 5th grade classroom teacher or the Newhart office. These forms are due to your 5th grade teacher by Thursday, March 24th.
What if I missed signing-up or I've changed my mind?
- If you missed the sign-ups or you changed your mind and want to be back into band, orchestra or choir, please bring
- this form to your music teacher or return it to the Newhart office. Our 6th grade classes sometimes fill up so make
- sure that you sign up early! There have been years in the past where students change their mind during the summer
- and the class has been full. Most years, there is still room all the way through the first days of school. Try not to wait!
Do you have a school instrument that I can borrow?
- Yes, we do! We have all of the instruments that you can play in our classes. Some students need
- to borrow an instrument due to cost and some borrow since they want to switch to a more in-demand
- and/or unusual instrument! We also encourage anyone who can afford it, to rent or purchase at a local store.
What is the difference between band & orchestra?
Orchestra is a string only class consisting of Violin, Viola, Cello & String Bass.
- Band is made up of Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax,
- Baritone "Bari" Sax, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone Horn, Tuba & Percussion.
Can I switch instruments in middle school?
- Since we have many students that come in playing the same instrument, we need to balance out the groups
- and also give opportunities for instruments that weren't previously available, we will talk with all of students
- and show them all the instruments that are available for their group within the first week of school. We never
- require any students to switch but encourage those interested. Before choosing which instrument you want
- to play in 6th grade, listen to the teachers talk before you make any decisions.
-
- In band you can play flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone "bari" sax,
- trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone horn, tuba & percussion. Percussion(drum) players will need
- to pass an audition within 2 weeks at the start of class. Percussion players need to have a mature attitude,
- good sense of rhythm and be able to read music. Percussion is made up of mallets, snare drum, bass drum, etc.
-
- In orchestra you can play the violin, viola, cello or string bass. We have really small basses (1/4-3/4 size)
- for those height challenged yet want to play the bass. Those who don't play violin will have a lot
- less competition and will fill our really high need for a balanced sound.
-
Do I need to bring my instrument the first day to school?
- You do NOT need to bring instruments the first day of school. We will give plenty of notice and time for
- students to get their instruments. (Especially since some students may change instruments and we
- will need a little more time to show them what is available, etc.)
Where do I put my instrument during the day?
- We have 3 classrooms dedicated to instrumental music. We have cabinets and storage
- for instruments while at school. You do not need to take them with you to your other classes!
If I want to be in the band or orchestra, how do I sign up?
- You need to turn in your elective choice form which you received at Newhart from the guidance department
- when you visited Newhart on April 17th. This form will need to be turned in on time to your 5th grade
- regular classroom teacher by the due date. Students who turn them in on time almost always get
- their first choice. Our classes are fairly popular, so get them in on time please!
Will I get Mr. Klingbeil or Mrs. Petty when I sign up?
You will get to see both of us!!! We team teach the classes so you will get to learn from 2 teachers not just 1. We have the largest portable in the district therefore we can rehearse larger groups when we want and smaller groups when we need to.
What about field trips?
- Go to the home page on this website and on the right side there is a list of events, current and past.
- Click on any of the titles and you will get the information. Most groups average 3-4 trips a year.
I want to get a head start. What can I do?
- Click here to go to a flash card program to help you with the names of your notes. It's really easy to use!
- Make sure your instrument is working properly. It may be wise to take it in for a minor adjustment if it's been a while since you've had it in the repair shop, especially woodwind instruments.
- Attend a summer music camp or take lessons. See link on home page.
- Try to be able to play everything in your current music book.
- PLEASE EMAIL US ANYTIME WITH QUESTIONS, CONCERNS AND/OR PROBLEMS!
- WE WILL CHECK OUR EMAIL, EVEN DURING THE SUMMER.
